Journal of the Damned

A house divided against itself can’t stand

Mark 3:20-30

Day 449:

There are still no electric lights. The fuel for the fires are running low, and food is becoming sparse; given that there are more mouths than ever to feed. New babies are arriving regularly; three this week alone. I hope and pray that the rescue party will return soon with those that can heal, and lead this congregation of people out of the depths of this god-forsaken cave.

Day 460:

Yesterday we used the last piece of wood. We have begun to burn clothing and whatever else we can get our hands on. Today one of the babies died due to starvation, brought on by shortage of food. There is no means of burying the corpse. To save the rest of the party from disease, we as a congregation have decided to feed the body to the flames.

Day 470:

The food ran out about five days ago, and a few of the older members of the congregation are showing signs of fatigue and weariness. There is talk of “thinning the herd” for the better of the party. I have called a meeting of the elders to discuss the situation, with the hope of putting an end to the rumors.

Day 470 – 2:00pm:

The meeting just ended. A decision has been made; one that goes against my better judgment. As a matter of policy, all in the party are called upon to contribute the betterment of the congregation as a whole. “This policy had now been extended beyond life itself. The elders feel that it is a waste to feed the corpses to the fire, when they can feed the entire party for a couple of days.” I of course, didn’t agree and spoke out against the proposal, but I was out-voted 4-1. We have agreed, however, to only use the corpses after they have died of natural causes. My concern is. “what happens when those corpses are all used up?’

Day 475:

Three of the older people have now died from “Natural causes”. The rest of the party has been informed of our decision on what to do with the corpses. Surprisingly, the news was met with little resistance; most having embraced the idea with open arms. Only one young man raised any objection to the decision made by the elders. I believe one of the deceased was his mother. I can’t help feeling that we have created foxes with sheep’s clothing, and then handed full rein of the flock over to them.

Day 476:

That young man has met with an “accident” during the night. At least he now is at peace with his mother.
